George III Mahogany Gainsborough Armchair

18th century
Description

This George III mahogany Gainsborough armchair dates to circa 1770 and has a high back, open sides and a camel back top rail, with the broad proportions associated with library armchairs of this type.

The padded arms are supported on crisply carved mahogany uprights which rake back towards the chair. Each support terminates in a C scroll, with carved trailing foliage set between fluted borders.

The stuff over ‘saddle seat’ provides a generous and comfortable sitting position. Beneath, a mahogany H stretcher supports the frame and legs, which remain free from breaks or splits. The chair stands on shallow fluted front legs and outstretched rear legs, terminating on the original leather and brass castors.

In Chippendale’s Director of 1753, chairs of this form were described as French chairs. Their frequent use in libraries soon led to the term library chair, which is how they are often recorded in eighteenth century inventories and the term generally preferred by Freshfords. The name Gainsborough chair nevertheless remains widely used within the antiques trade and early furniture literature.

The name derives from the English painter Thomas Gainsborough, whose portraits occasionally include chairs of this form. One example is his portrait of Charles, Earl Camden, later reproduced as an engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi and shown in the image gallery.

The chair retains its sturdy eighteenth century frame and is traditionally upholstered in horsehair.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Gainsborough chair, also known as a library chair, is an 18th-century English armchair featuring a wide seat, a tall upholstered backrest, and open padded armrests.

These chairs were typically constructed from solid mahogany or walnut frames, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and upholstered with woven silk, damask, or leather secured by brass studs.

Authentic George III armchairs exhibit hand-carved mahogany frames with natural age-related patination, hand-cut joinery marks, and hand-forged brass castors or tacks.

Place a Gainsborough armchair alongside a sleek contemporary side table or within a minimalist reading corner to create a refined focal point using historical contrast.

Maintain the timber frame by dusting regularly and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, while avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the upholstery.
