George III Laburnum Armchair in the Manner of Francis Brodie

18th century
Description

This George III laburnum armchair in the manner of Francis Brodie dates to circa 1780 and is constructed in solid laburnum with a shaped top rail, open fret vase shaped back splat and traditionally upholstered drop-in seat.

The shaped top rail is finished with scrolled ears above an open fret vase shaped back splat, which correctly sits into the connecting bracket above the recently re-covered drop-in seat. The seat retains its horsehair upholstery and has been covered in burnt orange coloured velvet fabric.

The arms are constructed in the solid and carved with subtle reeding, complementing the shallow thumbnail edging of the seat frame. Beneath, the laburnum H-stretcher connects the chamfered out-swept rear legs to the solid reeded front legs.

The restrained carving, unusual choice of laburnum and overall design are closely associated with the work of Francis Brodie, a Scottish cabinet maker whose furniture is recognised for its refined use of timber and elegant late eighteenth century forms.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III laburnum armchair dates from the mid-to-late 18th century and showcases classical Chippendale-influenced design features. These chairs typically incorporate intricate pierced back splats, sweeping armrests, and timber sourced from laburnum, which exhibits rich figure and grain.

Georgian armchairs were constructed using solid native and imported hardwoods like laburnum, mahogany, and oak, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joints. Seats were typically upholstered in wool velvet or damask, fitted over a wooden frame using hand-tacked webbing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery marks, unevenness beneath surfaces consistent with hand-planing, and natural oxidisation on raw timber elements. Look for intricate scrollwork, pierced splats, swept arms, and correct proportioning typical of 18th-century cabinetmaking.

An 18th-century carver chair functions well as a standalone desk chair in an office or as an accent piece in a hallway. Its rich timber tone contrasts effectively against contemporary neutral walls and minimalist modern furnishings.

Dust timber regularly using a dry, soft microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or cracking.
