Fine Victorian Burr Walnut Oval Loo Table, C.1870

19th century
Description

A fine Victorian burr walnut oval loo table, circa 1870, with a particularly attractive quarter-veneered and book-matched burr walnut top displaying richly figured grain and warm colour. The moulded edge sits above a plain burr walnut frieze.

The tilting top is raised on an impressive carved and turned central column, terminating in a substantial quadriform base with four boldly swept legs. The base is enriched with carved foliate decoration and scroll details, the legs terminating in carved feet with porcelain castors.

A handsome and highly decorative example, the superb figuring of the burr walnut being especially striking. The tilting mechanism allows the top to be raised vertically when not in use, making it both an attractive centre table and a practical piece for a period or traditional interior.

A loo table is a type of tilt-top table popular during the 19th century, originally designed for playing the card game Loo. These tables featured a hinged mechanism allowing the top to tilt vertically so the table could be pushed against a wall when not in use.

Victorian loo tables were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods like solid walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often finished with decorative decorative veneers such as burr walnut. The bases featured solid carved pedestal legs, iron brass catch mechanisms, and porcelain or brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct brass bolt or spring catch mechanisms on the underside of the top, original castors on the base legs, and natural aging or patination to the timber. Veneers often display hand-cut precision, book-matching, or quarter-matching across the tabletop surface.

A loo table works effectively as a compact dining table in a breakfast nook or as a statement centre table in an entrance foyer. Placing the table with its top tilted upward against a wall allows the timber grain to serve as a decorative focal point in a hallway or drawing room.

Keep burr walnut furniture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying or lifting. Clean the surface using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood and maintain its luster.
