Powerful Dutch Double Portrait in Style of Bartholomeus Van Der Helst - Oil on Canvas

17th century
Description

This large, powerful and decorative Dutch double portrait, circa 1650-1680, bears a very close resemblance to van der Helst's style and technique and could be attributed to him.

Framed in a black Dutch style frame suitable to the period.

CIRCLE OF BARTHOLOMEUS VAN DER HELST (HAARLEM 1613 – 1670 AMSTERDAM)

Portrait of a man and woman on a terrace with a formal garden and landscape beyond.

c.1650 - 60

Oil on canvas

187 x 135 cm

This portrait of a man and woman, presumably husband and wife, is typical of compositions

by Bartholomeus van der Helst, one of the most successful portrait painters in Amsterdam

between the date of his earliest known portrait The Regents of the Walloon Orphanage in

Amsterdam 1637 (Institut francais de Pays-Bas) and his death in 1670. Van der Helst was a

direct contemporary of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 – 1669), but his portraiture was more

popular with aristocratic clients, who were unsure of Rembrandt’s broad technique and dark,

brooding tonality and preferred Van der Helst’s meticulous treatment of rich costume and

accessories, and the general air of good humour and ease in his portraits.

Comparisons with the costume in works such as Van der Helst’s Portrait of Sophia Trip, wife

of Balthasar Coymans, signed and dated 1645, Sotheby’s London, 7th December 1988, lot

102, (fig. 1), supports the dating of our portrait to around 1650.

Dutch Golden Age double portraits typically depict married couples dressed in formal contemporary attire, often positioned against architectural elements or drapery to signify status and societal standing.

Artists during this period predominantly used oil pigments applied to stretched linen canvas or wood panels, finished with varnish and housed in dark timber frames.

Authenticity is assessed through pigment composition analysis, age-consistent craquelure patterns, stretcher bar construction, canvas weave density, and stylistic comparison to documented period masters.

Large-scale classical portraits serve as visual focal points above sideboards, mantelpieces, or in library spaces, pairing with dark wood furniture and neutral backdrop tones.

Canvas paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight and heat sources, maintained in stable humidity levels, dusted lightly with a soft dry brush, and cleaned exclusively by professional art conservators.
