We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scottish agate jewellery gained widespread popularity during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, driven by Queen Victorias enthusiasm for the Scottish Highlands and Balmoral Castle. Artisans gathered native stones such as agates and jaspers, cutting and fitting them into engraved silver settings inspired by traditional clan insignia and heraldic motifs.

These brooches were crafted using sterling or coin silver paired with polished native gemstones, including Montrose agate, grey banded agate, bloodstone, jasper, and cairngorm quartz or citrine. The stone sections were shaped individually by hand to fit flush into silver channel mountings.

Authentic Victorian examples feature unfoilbacked natural stones, hand-engraved foliate or scroll motifs, and period-specific fasteners such as a C-clasp with a steel pin extending beyond the brooch rim. Many Scottish silver items from this period were unhallmarked or bore only maker initials.

A Victorian brooch can be styled by securing it to the lapel of a tailored coat, attaching it to a silk scarf, or positioning it at the centre collar of a buttoned shirt. It can also be worn on heavy knitwear to add structured detail to modern outfits.

Clean the silver using a dry microfibre polishing cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or dips that can damage natural stones or strip historical oxidisation from engraved recessed areas. Store the piece flat in a dry, soft-lined jewellery box to prevent stone movement.
