Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III seating furniture, dating from 1760 to 1820, is defined by the widespread use of imported Cuban and West Indian mahogany, proportioned balance, and detailed hand-carving. Common design traits include pierced splats or ladder-backs, shaped cresting rails, shaped arm supports, and cabriole or square tapered legs.

Primary frames were predominantly constructed from dense, dark mahogany, while secondary interior woods for seat frames often included pine, beech, or oak. Upholstery traditionally incorporated horsehair padding, woven wool webs, iron coil springs or webbed supports, finished with damask, velvet, or needlepoint fabrics.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-tooling, such as irregular saw marks on secondary timbers, hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, and original wooden dowel fixings. Additional indicators include natural oxidation and wear on the undersides, irregular hand-cast brass studding, and unevenness in hand-carved decorative motifs.

A Georgian open armchair functions as an accent piece in a modern study, hallway, or living room when paired with clean-lined contemporary furniture. The combination of rich mahogany tones and classic fabric provides visual contrast against neutral or deeply painted walls.

Timber surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned annually with a high-grade beeswax polish to preserve the original patina. Upholstery requires gentle vacuuming with a brush attachment, and the item should be kept away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and fabric fading.
