Description

STUDIO OF SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE P.R.A (1769 - 1830) - PORTRAIT OF MISS THAYER.

Studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence, P.R.A. (1769-1830) - PORTRAIT OF MISS THAYER.

Portrait of Miss Thayer half-length, in a white dress velvet jacket and drapery, a window behind her.

Sir Thomas Lawrence (13 April 1769 – 7 January 1830) was an English portrait painter and collector. He was the finest portrait painter of his generation in Europe and the last English inheritor of the legacy of van Dyck. His technical facility and rapid and enormous public success should not obscure the originality and self-consciousness of his imagination. He also formed a superb collection of Old Master drawings. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and became its fourth president in 1820.

Lawrence''s influence on British portraiture is evident in the works of artists like Thomas Phillips, Margaret Sarah Carpenter and David Wilkie who adopted his techniques and stylistic choices.

The present picture is a hitherto unrecorded studio version after the original recorded portrait of a Miss Thayer ( NPG Heinz Library)

This fine work is in excellent condition and is offered ready to hang and enjoy in its original hand carved and gilded frame, which is itself a work of art.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency portraiture is characterised by dramatic lighting, fluid brushwork, and expressive poses influenced by master painters of the era. Female subjects were frequently depicted in fashionable Empire-line attire against rich, atmospheric backgrounds or crimson drapery.

Paintings from this era were typically executed using oil pigments bound with drying oils such as linseed, applied onto woven canvas or wooden panels and stretched over timber support frames.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural age-craquelure across the paint layer, historical stretcher bar impressions, period-appropriate canvas weave, and evidence of historical varnish layers or natural oxidisation.

A period portrait can serve as a focal point above a fireplace mantel, sideboard, or framed within a curated gallery wall to bring historical narrative and visual texture into contemporary living spaces.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, excessive heat sources, and fluctuating humidity. Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free brush and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning or varnish removal.
