Antique Georgian Mahogany Inlaid Fold-over Card & Console Table

19th century
Description

A very elegant George III mahogany inlaid card table dating to circa 1800, designed to serve equally well as a console or side table when closed.

The beautifully figured mahogany top has rounded front corners and is finely outlined with contrasting string inlay, giving the table a particularly refined appearance. The restrained decoration and slender proportions are typical of the late Georgian period, when furniture was becoming lighter and more elegant in design.

The shaped frieze is also delicately inlaid and the table stands on four finely turned and tapering legs, with additional supporting legs revealed when the top is opened. The narrow turned legs, with their distinctive ringed decoration, give the table a wonderfully light and graceful appearance.

The hinged top folds over to reveal the original green baize-lined playing surface, transforming the piece from an elegant console table into a practical card or games table. When closed, its shallow depth makes it particularly useful in a hallway, drawing room or sitting room.

A lovely example of late George III furniture, combining beautiful mahogany, understated inlay and exceptionally elegant proportions.

Condition Report:

In good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its circa 1800 date. The mahogany retains a rich colour and attractive figuring. The green baize shows expected signs of age and use.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian fold-over card table is an 18th to early 19th-century accent table designed with a double-leaf top that unfolds to create a larger gaming surface. When closed, it rests flat against a wall as a decorative console or pier table.

These tables were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often detailed with satinwood or boxwood inlay, brass hinges, and woven baize surfaces on the interior gaming top.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery, hand-planed secondary woods such as pine or oak inside the apron, authentic wear around the gate-leg mechanisms, and original brass hinges.

Position the table closed against an entry hall wall or living room alcove, adorned with a table lamp, artwork, or decorative glassware to create an elegant focal point.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the finish.
