A small late sixteenth / early seventeenth-century Flemish oak coffer, often described as a strong box. The rectangular top with money slot sits above a simple boarded body, with original iron pin hinges still in place and a heavy circular lock plate with hasp. A distinctive feature is the scalloped or crenellated base, a classic Flemish detail. The oak has a rich, mellow dry patina from centuries of age and use. Inside, there’s a single compartment with a central divider. A sturdy, honest simple piece of early vernacular furniture with wonderful character.
