Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Flemish oak coffer is a wooden storage chest crafted in Flanders during the Renaissance period, typically dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These pieces were constructed from solid European oak and used primarily for securing valuables, textiles, or household documents.

Coffers from this period were built using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs rather than modern adhesives. The ironwork, including hinges, straps, and lock plates, was hand-forged by blacksmiths and fitted directly into the timber.

Authentic period oak features signs of age such as uneven hand-sawn timber marks, shrinkage around wooden pegs, and dark oxidisation around iron fittings. Original surfaces show uneven wear patterns, and the underside of the lid often retains hand-planed tool marks.

A historical oak chest serves as a grounding accent piece in modern rooms, functioning as a hallway storage bench, a coffee table, or an end-of-bed trunk. The rich timber texture creates visual contrast alongside clean minimalist lines and contemporary fabrics.

To preserve early oak, apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft lint-free cloth. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the timber from cracking or warping.
