Brief Description:
Of elegant baluster form, both vases are decorated in the traditional underglaze cobalt-blue palette upon a white porcelain ground.
The principal panels depict Chinese ladies in traditional dress, surrounded by flowering plants, foliage, trees and other classical Chinese motifs.
One vase portrays a seated lady apparently engaged in scholarly or domestic activity, while its companion depicts two elegantly dressed female figures standing together within a garden setting.
Further hand-painted floral and foliate borders decorate the necks and bases, completing the wonderfully balanced designs.
The subtle differences between the two scenes give each vase its own individual character while allowing them to display beautifully together as a pair.
Of particular appeal is the wonderful variation within the hand-painted cobalt decoration, something that gives antique Chinese porcelain considerably more charm and character than later mechanically decorated pieces.
They are a very attractive and extremely decorative pair, and their relatively small proportions make them ideal for displaying upon a mantelpiece, side table, desk, cabinet or amongst a collection of Chinese works of art.
