Landscape Oil Painting of a Figure Outside a Cottage by Robert John Hammond

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Benton Fine Art
Description

Robert John Hammond

British, (1853-1911)

A Devonshire Homestead

Oil on canvas, signed, inscribed in pencil to reverse

Image size: 15.5 inches x 23.25 inches

Size including frame: 23 inches x 30.75 inches

A pleasing springtime landscape painting of a woman feeding birds outside a cottage by Robert John Hammond. A young woman is depicted standing by a path outside a thatched cottage. As she feeds birds on the ground, others are shown alighting from nearby blossom trees. To the right of the figure, a stream can be seen winding around a haybarn, whilst in the distance beyond the peaks of a hill range provide a dramatic backdrop. The topography is similar to that of the Brendon Hills near Exmoor, which the artist is known to have painted.

Robert John Hammond was a landscape painter born in Blackfriars, London in 1853. By the time he was 18 he had moved to Sutton Coldfield where he initially became an apprentice watchmaker before becoming a full time artist. In 1871, he married Lucy Banner, the sister of the artist Alfred Banner (1860-1914) at Kings Norton, Worcestershire. They lived at 90 Kyrwicks Lane, Bordesley in Birmingham before moving to 467 Moseley Road, Balsall Heath.

Hammond became well known for his landscapes and rural scenes of the surrounding countryside but also travelled further afield to Bristol, Bournemouth, Cornwall, Devon and Sheffield as well as Scotland and Wales. His son Horace Hammond (1879-1966) became a lithographer and landscape artist who used the pseudonyms of A D Bell and J Barclay.

He exhibited widely between 1882-1911 at the Royal Society of Artist, Birmingham as well as at the Manchester City Art Gallery. Hammond’s paintings show a pre-Raphaelite influence, particularly in his rendering of the landscape and use of colours. Often depicting cottages and rosy cheeked children at play they served as a reminder of a life far removed from the emerging industrial cities of the time. Towards the end of his life he lived at 3 Walford Road in Aston.

An example of his work can be found at the Birmingham Museum.

Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, British landscape artists frequently depicted idealised rural views featuring thatched cottages, blossoming flora, and pastoral life. These works reflected a romanticised appreciation for nature and countryside heritage during a period of rapid industrialisation.

Artists painted using oil pigments bound with drying oils on stretched flax or cotton canvas backings. Frames were constructed from carved wood or plaster composition moulds applied to a wooden core, which were then finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period paintings show uniform fine craquelure across the paint layer, natural age patination on the reverse canvas, and stylistic traits consistent with the artists known body of work. Frame construction methods, such as mitred joinery and compo moulding textures, also help confirm the era.

A classic landscape painting creates an elegant focal point when positioned above a sleek sideboard or a traditional fireplace mantelpiece. The rich gilding and detailed brushwork contrast effectively with clean contemporary architecture and minimalist furnishings.

Dust the painted surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush without applying liquid solutions or household polish. Position the painting away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent pigment flaking and frame deterioration.
