Antique George III Mahogany Tripod Pole Screen C.1800

18th century
Description

A fine Georgian mahogany tripod pole screen, the shield-shaped frame housing a later hand-worked needlepoint panel in William Morris's Strawberry Thief pattern backed in golden slubbed silk and its original cast brass adjustment collar, all raised on a slender pole with lower vase-turned detail and tripod base.

Uniting late Georgian cabinetmaking with iconic Arts and Crafts decoration, this piece creates a vibrant, ready-to-place statement, bringing together two peak eras of British design.

Very good antique condition with light surface wear. Structurally sound, smooth in its height adjustment, and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1800.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pole screen is an adjustable standing panel mounted on a vertical rod with a tripod base, originally designed in the 18th century to protect a persons face from the direct heat of an open fire.

Georgian pole screens were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, combined with hand-stitched needlepoint, tapestry, or silk panels held within wooden frames.

Authentic George III pole screens feature hand-carved mahogany tripod legs, turned central columns, period brass adjusting collar mechanisms, and hand-worked needlework or tapestry inserts.

An antique pole screen can be placed adjacent to a fireplace hearth, within a reading alcove, or in an empty corner to provide vertical structure and historical texture to contemporary room schemes.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement and textile fading, dust the woodwork with a dry microfibre cloth, and clean the textile using a low-suction soft brush attachment.
