Description

19th-century Rembrandt Etching “The Death of the Virgin” c.1870 – Amand-Durand

Brief Description:

This is an exceptional-quality original 19th-century etching after Rembrandt van Rijn’s celebrated 1639 masterpiece, The Death of the Virgin.

The extraordinarily detailed composition depicts the elderly Virgin Mary upon her deathbed, surrounded by a gathering of grieving figures, including apostles, attendants and a physician, while heavenly figures and angels appear dramatically through the clouds above.

Dating to the third quarter of the 19th century, this extremely fine impression was probably produced by the celebrated French master printmaker and engraver Charles Amand-Durand (1831–1905), who became renowned for his exceptionally accomplished reproductions of works by Rembrandt and other Old Masters.

This is undoubtedly one of the finest examples of this subject that we have encountered.

When examined beneath magnification, the extraordinary intricacy of the line work, cross-hatching, tonal variation and minute detail becomes particularly apparent. The quality of execution is quite breathtaking and demonstrates why Rembrandt's etchings remain amongst the most admired works in the history of printmaking.

The work bears a pencil inscription/signature “De Rembrandt” to the lower right margin, with a further indistinct pencil inscription to the lower left.

It is presently mounted beneath glass within a simple ebonised frame, which has protected and presented the work well. However, given the quality and importance of the image, we would humbly suggest that it would be worthy of a much grander period-style frame.

This really is, as we say in the art world, a keeper — an exceptionally decorative and historically fascinating interpretation of one of Rembrandt's most celebrated religious compositions.

The new owner will undoubtedly be delighted with this beautiful and highly accomplished 19th-century work.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dutch Golden Age printmaking is distinguished by high dramatic contrast, complex cross-hatching, and realistic depictions of light and texture, often featuring religious, genre, or landscape subjects.

Heliogravure prints were produced using a photochemical process that transferred image details onto a copper plate, which was then hand-inked and pulled on an intaglio press to replicate original line art.

Amand-Durand reproductions often feature specific red or black collector stamps on the reverse, crisp plate impressions, and high-grade laid paper matching historical standards.

Frame the artwork with an acid-free mount in a simple dark wood frame to highlight the fine line work, hanging it as part of a gallery wall or above dark timber furniture.

Store or display paper prints under UV-protective glass in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, and ensure all framing materials are acid-free.
