George III Satinwood and Kingwood Crossbanded Demi-lune Card Table, Circa 1800

19th century
Description

A particularly attractive George III satinwood card table, dating to circa 1800, of elegant demi-lune form and displaying a lovely warm colour and figure.

The hinged top is beautifully figured and edged with kingwood crossbanding, opening to reveal a green baize-lined playing surface and supported by the rear swing-out rear legs. The curved frieze is similarly crossbanded and decorated with restrained inlaid foliate motifs above the legs.

Raised on four slender square tapering legs, the table has the light, refined proportions characteristic of the late Georgian period.

When closed, its elegant demi-lune form makes it equally useful as a console or side table, allowing it to sit neatly against a wall when not required for cards.

A fine and versatile late 18th/early 19th-century card table, with particularly attractive satinwood figuring and delicate decorative detail.

English, circa 1800.

A George III demi-lune card table is a semi-circular piece of late eighteenth-century furniture featuring a hinged top that unfolds into a full circle for card playing. When closed, it serves as a decorative console table designed to sit flush against a wall.

These tables were primarily constructed using West Indian satinwood veneers over secondary timbers such as pine or oak. Decorative borders frequently utilised contrasting exotic hardwoods like kingwood, rosewood, and tulipwood for crossbanding and stringing.

Authentic period tables feature hand-cut joinery, original brass card-table hinges, and secondary woods showing irregular hand-planing marks. Look for natural oxidation on the underside of timber and subtle shrinkage marks consistent with two centuries of age.

Position the closed table against a hallway or entryway wall as a console, paired with a contemporary mirror or artwork above. Its curved silhouette works well in narrow spaces, balancing modern geometric architecture.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the light satinwood veneer from fading or lifting. Clean the surface with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to maintain the timber patination.
