Regency Mahogany Bow Front Pedestal Sideboard, Circa 1820

19th century
Description

A Regency mahogany pedestal sideboard, dating to circa 1820, of particularly pleasing colour and figure.

The shaped top is surmounted by a low panelled gallery and arranged above three frieze drawers, the outer drawers following the bowed form of the pedestals. The drawer fronts and cupboard doors display well-figured mahogany, enhanced by contrasting dark moulded borders.

The two bow-fronted pedestal cupboards are raised on short splayed feet and retain their brass knob handles. The left-hand cupboard is fitted with a shelf, whilst the right incorporates a cellaret drawer with brass carrying handle, with useful storage beneath.

A good-quality and attractive Regency sideboard, combining elegant proportions with generous storage and displaying a particularly warm, well-figured mahogany throughout.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency pedestal sideboards, originating in the early 19th century, feature symmetrical proportions, architectural forms, and twin pedestal cupboards flanking a central kneehole area. They frequently incorporate bow or serpentine fronts, flame mahogany veneers, and low rear galleries or brass rails.

The primary exterior wood was high-grade mahogany, often using flame mahogany veneers for decorative door panels and drawer fronts. Secondary internal woods generally included pine, oak, or cedar, accented with solid brass drawer pulls, lion-mask handles, or turn-key escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed secondary woods inside drawers, and original brass lock mechanisms. The mahogany finish often demonstrates natural patination, subtle colour variation, and fine crazing in historical varnishes.

A Regency sideboard serves as a focal point in contemporary dining rooms, entrance halls, or drawing rooms. Positioned beneath large modern artwork or a gilded mirror, it pairs historic craftsmanship with clean architectural lines.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, warping, or fading of the mahogany veneer.
