1900 - 1920
Description

This antique band is modelled in 9ct Gold, complete with a yellow gold opening heart padlock drop, and is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1922.

Padlocks first became popular during the Victorian period, worn by women whose significant others were leaving for an extended period. The significance was that the padlock would be locked onto the woman, and only her beloved would have the key- he would then open it upon his return.

Mainly popular on bracelets, padlock rings are much more scarce and collectable.

Imagine the joy on your loved one's face when they receive this rare, beautifully crafted ring. It's not just a piece of jewellery, it's a symbol of your love and thoughtfulness.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Heart padlock jewellery gained widespread popularity during the Victorian era as a symbol of love and commitment, where functional locks were worn on bracelets and necklaces. By the early 20th century, the motif evolved into decorative charms suspended from rings and bands, maintaining its romantic symbolism into the 1920s and beyond.

1920s British jewellery was predominantly crafted from 9ct or 18ct solid yellow, rose, or white gold. Rings were typically die-struck or hand-cast, featuring hand-stamped assay hallmarks that verified the gold purity, origin city, and date of manufacture.

Authentic British gold jewellery contains a full set of official hallmarks stamped inside the band. These markings include a makers mark, a fineness mark denoting gold purity (such as 375 for 9ct gold), an assay office symbol (such as the anchor for Birmingham), and a specific date letter code.

Antique rings can be displayed as decorative accents on dressing tables using velvet-lined ring trays, vintage leather ring boxes, or glass cloches. Grouping small jewellery items inside antique glass display cases provides both secure storage and visual interest.

Clean 9ct gold rings using warm water, mild detergent, and a soft-bristled brush to remove dust and oil build-up. Avoid exposure to harsh household chemicals or abrasive polishes, and store the item in a fabric-lined box to prevent surface scratches on the metal.
