Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian bookcases from the late 19th century are characterised by substantial proportions, architectural mouldings, and heavy construction using rich hardwoods. Unlike earlier glaze-fronted designs, open bookcases provided easy access to large personal library collections and often featured adjustable shelving systems.

High-grade Cuban or Honduran mahogany, oak, and walnut were the primary timbers utilised. Construction relied on traditional joinery techniques, including hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon framing, solid tongue-and-groove backboards, and brass shelf support mechanisms.

Authentic pieces frequently bear stamped maker marks, brass plaques, or paper labels on the top drawer edge, backboards, or inner frames. Genuine Victorian items display natural age-related patina, hand-finished joinery, and consistent wear patterns on adjustable shelf supports.

A large open bookcase serves as a primary focal point along a neutral feature wall. Balance modern living spaces by breaking up book spines with ceramic objects, framed art, and decorative glassware across the adjustable tiers.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent wood movement or shrinkage.
