Georgian Oak Lowboy

18th century
Description

A good quality oak lowboy dating from the late 18th century. The overhanging top has a moulded edge and it stands on cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. It has an arrangement of three drawers above a shaped frieze and each drawer has a brass plate handle.

It is in good original condition with a beautiful rich patina. There are some signs of age and use, a few minor marks and knocks here and there and a couple of old repairs but nothing untoward and the table is strong and sturdy. There are signs of historic worm in places which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the table structurally or aesthetically. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is a low, table-height chest with drawers that originated in the 18th century, serving primarily as a dressing table or side table in British households.

Georgian lowboys were constructed using solid native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and cast brass batwing hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, asymmetrical dovetail joints, period-appropriate brass handles, and natural surface wear along the cabriole legs and pad feet.

An antique lowboy functions effectively as an entryway console table, a compact bedroom dressing table, or a focal accent table placed along a hallway.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax once or twice a year while keeping the wood clear of direct radiators and moisture.
