Antique Victorian Burr Walnut Trefoil Occasional Table C.1860

19th century
Description

A late 19th century burr walnut occasional table, with a radially segment-cut trefoil top set over three turned finely carved solid walnut supports, united by a matching veneered lower tier, and raised on swept carved legs with scroll feet.

Dating from the golden era of English burr walnut cabinetmaking, its compact clover shape allows it to sit naturally in the angled space between a pair of armchairs or tuck neatly into a tight corner.

Very good antique condition, showing a deep natural lustre and an attractive aged patina. Structurally sound and ready to place.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian trefoil occasional table is a small accent piece designed during the mid-to-late 19th century, featuring a distinctive three-lobed top inspired by gothic and floral motifs. Popularised during the 1860s, these tables were constructed to hold tea sets, lamps, or decorative objects in drawing rooms.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently utilised burr walnut veneers applied over solid timber cores to achieve intricate marbled grain patterns. The supporting elements were typically turned and hand-carved from solid walnut or mahogany to ensure stability.

Authentic pieces feature natural variations in the veneer grain, historic joinery techniques such as hand-cut dowels, and age-appropriate patination on the undersides. Look for hand-carved detailing on the feet and turned support columns that display subtle human variations.

Position the piece alongside a contemporary armchair or sofa as a functional drinks surface, or set it in an unused nook topped with a ceramic vase. Pairing warm historic wood tones with neutral modern textiles provides a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish once or twice per year. Ensure the table is positioned away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer movement or fading.
