William IV Country House Armchair

19th century
Description

A well drawn early 19th century country house armchair. Raised on walnut legs and the original L.W. Lewty brass casters. Retaining the original horsehair innards which feel firm and intact. The horsehair squab also appears to be original.

Overall the chair stands firm. There are some minor losses to the legs which will be restored by us before it leaves. The rails show evidence of historic worm which has been treated for good measure and it is only cosmetic and not structural.

For upholstery and restoration.

As with all our upholstered seating we do offer upholstery should you wish.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The William IV period, spanning from 1830 to 1837, bridged the Regency and Victorian eras with furniture defined by substantial proportions, turned timber legs, and comfortable upholstered seating.

These chairs typically featured solid hardwood frames such as mahogany or oak, stuffed with natural horsehair and fibre over coil springs, supported by turned wooden legs and heavy brass castors.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit turned or lotus-carved front legs, stout brass castors, deep seat proportions, and robust joinery typical of British cabinetmaking in the 1830s.

Reupholstering a period armchair frame in modern linen, velvet, or wool allows it to serve as a contrasting accent piece within contemporary or traditional design schemes.

Keep exposed timber legs polished with natural beeswax, vacuum upholstery gently with a soft brush attachment, and position the chair away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood warping and fabric deterioration.
