Victorian Cane Seated Country House Library Chair

19th century
Description

This a lovely quality rare surviving Victorian mahogany and cane library chair. Standing on carved mahogany legs all complete with original brass casters. The cane work is all in tact which is great to see and looks to be original throughout. The chair would benefit from a seat cushion which we can add for an additional cost should you like. The proportions are neat and the details are elegant and not too heavy. Overall condition is very good with no weakness. There is evidence of a historic repair to the front left leg but all solid and sympathetically done.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian library chair is a specialized armchair designed for reading rooms, study spaces, or private libraries during the nineteenth century, frequently featuring carved wooden frames, cane panels, or leather upholstery.

These chairs typically utilized solid dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood for the structural frame, paired with hand-woven rattan cane for the back and seat panels.

Authentic period pieces feature period-correct joinery, natural hand-woven cane work showing subtle patination, original brass castors, and hand-carved decorative details such as scroll arms or fluted legs.

A Victorian cane armchair can be positioned alongside a modern minimalist desk or set in a quiet reading corner next to a contemporary floor lamp to introduce warm timber tones and woven texture.

Keep the timber clean using a dry cloth and nourish with natural beeswax, while periodically dampening the underside of the woven cane with a moist sponge to maintain flexibility and prevent brittle cracking.
