Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the late Victorian era, focusing on the principle of art for arts sake. Furniture from this period emphasizes simplified geometric forms, refined wood turning, delicate fluting, and Japanese design influences over heavy ornamentation.

Victorian side tables were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Joints relied on traditional mortise and tenon or dovetail construction, paired with cast brass fittings and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic pieces often exhibit maker stamps or paper trade labels on the underside or drawer interior. Additional indicators include hand-fluted legs, original brass castors, period mortise-and-tenon joinery, and natural surface patination acquired over time.

A Victorian side table functions effectively as an accent piece beside modern upholstered sofas, as a lamp stand in an entryway, or in a reading corner. Combining dark timber with neutral contemporary upholstery creates a balanced contrast.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently along the grain, and avoid placing furniture in direct sunlight or near radiator heat sources.
