Antique Georgian Oak Vernacular Stool C.1750

18th century
Description

A mid 18th century country-made oak stool, the curved single-slab hand-carved saddle seat with exposed wedged through-tenons, set over four splayed legs united by staggered pegged stretchers.

Carved directly from a solid log section to maximise structural mass, the heavy-gauge oak slab exhibits an extraordinary surface history from generations of use. Its pronounced splayed stance provides a wide, stable footprint, making it ideal as an occasional stool, fireside seat or simply as a sculptural accent in a hallway or beside a hearth.

Very good antique condition, retaining an exceptional aged patina and timber character, with historic replacement stretchers to the rear and one side. Structurally solid and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1750.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian vernacular furniture refers to unpretentious, utilitarian pieces constructed by rural craftsmen during the 18th and early 19th centuries using native timbers such as oak, elm, or ash.

These stools were primarily constructed from solid local hardwoods, predominantly English oak, joined using mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden pegs rather than metal nails.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-planing, irregular dimensions, pegged joinery, natural shrinkage across the grain, and dark oxidisation or wear in areas handled frequently.

A primitive wooden stool functions well as an accent piece, serving as a low side table beside a armchair, a plant pedestal, or a decorative object on a fireplace hearth.

Dust regularly with a dry soft cloth and apply a coat of clear beeswax polish annually to preserve the timbers patination, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber split.
