Antique William IV Walnut & Mahogany Wine Table C.1830

19th century
Description

A William IV tripod wine table, the circular top inlaid with geometric optical cube parquetry within a crossbanded walnut border and ebonised moulded rim, set over a slender vertically reeded baluster stem, above a carved lotus collar and deeply gadrooned cushion base raised on swept scrolled tripod feet.

Embodying the distinct William IV taste for graphic woodwork and sculptural turning, the interplay between fine geometric veneering and heavy architectural turning exemplifies the bold, sculptural shift of the period.

Very good antique condition, displaying a rich patina and natural historical warping across the timber top consistent with age. Structurally sound, stable and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1830.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A William IV wine table is a small occasional table dating from the 1830s, designed primarily to hold beverages or light refreshments. Characteristically featuring a central pedestal column with tripod feet, these pieces reflect the transitional design period between late Georgian symmetry and Victorian decorative motifs.

Cabinetmakers primarily used dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood. Construction frequently involved solid carved pillars, hand-turned pedestal shafts, and decorative parquetry or marquetry top veneers.

Authentic William IV tables feature prominent design elements including fluted or turned pillars, gadrooned carving, and substantial tripod bases. Inspection of the underside typically reveals hand-cut structural joints and natural age-related wear.

Place a wine table adjacent to an armchair or sofa to function as a compact surface for lighting or beverages. Its small footprint enables seamless integration into reading nooks, alcoves, or living room seating arrangements.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically. Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent veneer movement or finish fading.
