Coastal Landscape Oil Painting by Peter Brannan 1926-1994

A great oil on board depicting a coastal scene by the artist Peter Brannan 1926-1994. A wonderful work painted in a post-impressionist manner depicting a choppy sea with figures on a small pier and a busy port in the background, which is most likely in Lincolnshire. The work is in excellent condition, signed and dated 1959. Peter Brannan (1926–1994) was a painter, draughtsman, printmaker and teacher, born in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. He studied at Grimsby School of Art, then Leicester College of Art. He taught mainly in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Brannan was elected RBA in 1960 and was president of Lincolnshire and South Humberside Artists. He showed in exhibitions at The Royal Academy, New England Art Club, and elsewhere. Brannan had a series of solo shows with The Trafford Gallery, one at The Usher Gallery, Lincoln, 1978, and a retrospective at The Goldmark Gallery, Uppingham, in 1995. The Usher Gallery, Grundy House Museum in Blackpool and Lincolnshire Education Committee hold his work. Brannan admired and was influenced by the work of French Post-Impressionists, also Cotman and Chardin. He lived in Welbourn, Lincolnshire. This is a great example of Brannan’s work depicting the post war industrial landscape against the dynamism of the natural world. The piece is framed in the original painted frame; it also has an exhibition label with the title: ‘The harbour’ and a label for the original owner.
