Rare Late 18th Century Continental Mahogany Commode of Oxbow Form of Generous Proportions

18th century
Description

A rare late18th century (circa 1790) Continental mahogany commode of oxbow form and of generous proportions, possibly German.

This unusual commode consists of a solid mahogany top of oxbow form to the front with a moulded edge.

This leads down to four graduated drawers of oxbow form with superb quality brass handles and escutcheons, to either side the corners of fluted and stop-fluted design.

This leads down to a moulded edge of oxbow form to the front, the sides of mahogany with moulded edge below all supported on four shaped ogee feet.

To the reverse we have found a small brass plaque ‘AGNEW’ which probably relates to a previous owner.

This commode is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Please note: the bronze has been used for photographic purposes only and is not included in the price.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An oxbow commode is a chest of drawers featuring a contoured front face where the outer sections curve outward while the centre indents, mimicking the shape of a drawn bow. Popular across Europe during the late 18th century, these pieces combine practical storage with advanced cabinetmaking skills.

Primary construction typically featured dense mahogany or walnut, with secondary timbers such as oak, pine, or fruitwood used for interior drawer linings. Hardware was generally cast from brass and hand-chased to create detailed handles and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand craftsmanship, including hand-sawn backboards, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, and shrinkage marks on solid timber panels. Original drawer runners will show natural wear from centuries of friction.

Position the piece as an anchor along a prominent wall, balancing the deep wood tones against contemporary light wall colours. Complement the surface with modern table lamps, contemporary artwork, or understated ceramic accessories to contrast traditional and modern elements.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, joint splitting, and surface fading.
