Rocking Horse by G & J Lines of London (1904)

1900 - 1920
For Sale by The Juniper Barn
Description

150

Crafted around 1904 by the renowned rocking horse manufacturer G & J Lines of London, this beautiful, superb quality horse was unearthed from the basement of a school in Wales and restored in 2008.

A testament to traditional toy making artistry, the horse is structurally sound and immediately usable, with a smooth rocking movement.

Made traditionally from beech and pine, with a covering of gesso before being painted, the carving is superbly detailed - the horse has been given a muscular neck and chest along with strong facial details. The mane and tail are horsehair.

Unusually, the horse can be ridden by three children at once, using the seats at each end of the rocker.

It could benefit from more extensive, purely cosmetic restoration, if desired.

More photos are available on request.

Dimensions in cm: full height 126, full length of rocker 240, height to top of hind quarters 93, length of horse from front to back hoof 137, width between hooves 41.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bow rocker rocking horses featured carved wooden bodies mounted on long curved wooden bows, offering a sweeping movement for play.

Traditional makers used carved pine or beech wood for the body, coated with plaster gesso and hand-painted dapple patterns, fitted with real horsehair manes, glass eyes, and genuine leather saddlery.

Key identification markers include distinct head carving shapes, glass eyes, specific tack metalwork, and often a metal makers badge or stamped lettering near the base.

An antique rocking horse functions as a sculptural focal point when placed in a spacious hallway, drawing room alcove, or traditional nursery setting.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood cracking or gesso peeling, and gently clean leather fittings with specialised wax dressing.
