Description:

This is a fine quality antique English Victorian wall mirror, with a top-quality decorative concave pine frame, circa 1850, in excellent condition. The 19th century wall mirror is constructed with a quality and genuine pine and sectional plaster frame, featuring a concave shape decorated with detailed, symmetrical carvings. The antique Victorian overmantle mirror is fitted with a new mirror plate, which is in excellent condition. The frame measures 3ft 1⅜” high x 2ft 9½” wide; therefore, it's of good proportions and would suit a large room. The antique mantel mirror can be hung either portrait or landscape (the hanging rope is currently set to landscape, but we can adjust this to portrait if preferred).

This large English Victorian wall mirror would look superb in the living room above a fireplace or mantelpiece, or in the hallway, as it is a well-proportioned mirror. This decorative antique wall mirror would certainly grace either a contemporary or traditional home and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-19th-century Victorian gilt mirrors feature timber frames overlaid with moulded gesso decoration and applied gold leaf. They typically draw inspiration from classical, Rococo, or Gothic design elements, incorporating stylized foliage, beaded borders, and clean geometric proportions.

These mirrors were constructed using a softwood backboard frame covered in plaster or gesso composition. Gold leaf was applied over the gesso via water or oil gilding techniques, framing a central pane of silvered or mercury glass.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit signs of natural age, such as slight cracking or crazing in the gesso plaster, wear to the gilding revealing the underlying reddish bole clay, and dark spots or oxidation, known as foxing, within the glass panel.

Positioning a period gilt mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or entryway console provides visual contrast against contemporary wall colours while reflecting light to brighten the room.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft dry brush or feather duster. Avoid liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or commercial polishes, as moisture can dissolve the water-soluble gesso base or lift delicate gold leaf.
