Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century fire tools, commonly referred to as fire irons or companion sets, typically comprise a poker, coal tongs, and an ash shovel. Designed during the Georgian and Victorian eras, these sets were essential hearth accessories crafted to manage open coal or wood fires while serving as decorative metalwork.

Period companion sets were predominantly constructed from wrought steel, cast iron, and polished brass. Higher-status sets often paired polished steel shaftsfrequently decorated with barley-twist turning or knop detailingwith cast brass handles or finials to reflect hearth light.

Authentic 19th-century fire tools feature hand-turned or forged barley-twist shafts, heavy cast brass handles with subtle casting seams, and intricate hand-pierced motifs on the shovel pan. Look for signs of light surface oxidisation, authentic soot deposits in crevices, and hand-riveted assembly.

Place a set of fire irons directly onto a stone hearth or rest them against a fireplace alcove to frame a wood-burning stove or traditional open fire. The contrast of polished steel and brass against brickwork or painted chimney breasts creates an intriguing focal point in contemporary or period interiors.

Remove soot and debris using a soft bristle brush and dry microfibre cloth. Polish brass handles with a suitable metal compound while applying a thin coat of microcrystalline wax to the steel components to prevent rust without stripping historic patina.
