Lee Hawkins Antiques & Interiors has dated this 19th Century Marine Oil Painting to the 19th Century.
In the foreground, figures occupy a substantial river barge, while larger sailing ships and distant architecture emerge through the warm haze beyond. Meadows’ characteristic attention to maritime detail is balanced by a soft, tonal palette of amber, gold and muted brown, creating a scene of remarkable tranquillity and depth.

The painting is signed Arthur J. Meadows to the lower-left corner and bears an engraved artist’s plaque to the frame. Its richly moulded gilt surround provides considerable architectural presence, making the work particularly suited to a drawing room, study, hallway or traditional country-house interior.

Arthur Joseph Meadows belonged to a distinguished family of British marine painters and became especially admired for his carefully observed coastal and continental harbour scenes. Signed examples of his work continue to appeal to collectors of Victorian maritime art, with their combination of recognised authorship, decorative quality and historical character offering enduring collector interest.

The painting and frame display age-related wear consistent with their 19th-century origin, including areas of rubbing and patination to the gilding, all contributing to the authentic antique appearance.
