Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian serpentine chest of drawers is an 18th-century case furniture piece featuring a distinctive S-curve or wave-like front profile. Popularised during the mid-to-late 1700s, these chests were crafted from fine hardwoods like mahogany and often featured graduated drawers and decorative brass hardware.

Primary construction utilised dense cuban or West Indian mahogany for visible exterior surfaces, prized for its rich figure and colour. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings and rear casing panels, complemented by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed backboards, and secondary drawer linings made from oak or pine. The presence of natural timber shrinkage, historic wear around original keyholes, and hand-cast brass fittings also indicate period age.

A serpentine chest functions well as a focal statement in a hallway, dining space, or bedroom. Pairing dark mahogany against neutral walls, contemporary framed artwork, or clean-lined lamps creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, drying, or fading of the original finish.
