Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An arched overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring a flattened base and a gently curved upper frame. Popularised during the Victorian era, these mirrors were crafted to reflect candlelight and natural light, expanding the visual proportion of reception rooms.

Traditional giltwood mirrors were constructed using timber frames coated with gesso, a smooth mixture of chalk and glue. Decorative leaf motifs and mouldings were carved or molded directly onto the surface before gold leaf was applied using water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic antique gilt mirrors display subtle wear, oxidisation, and tiny cracks in the gesso, often revealing the red or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf. Inspecting the reverse side usually shows hand-planed backboards, antique iron fasteners, and light silvering degradation on the original glass.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or a contemporary console table to establish a clear architectural focal point. Placing gilt details against neutral or dark wall paint creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a dry, soft bristle brush or camel-hair duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean glass surfaces carefully by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than onto the mirror itself.
