Regency William IV Rosewood Open Bookcase Adjustable Shelves C.1835

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

This is an attractive William IV rosewood open bookcase, dating from around 1835.

Constructed in beautifully figured rosewood, the bookcase is surmounted by a moulded top above a plain frieze and stands between a pair of elegant carved pilasters with stylised tulip capitals. The restrained architectural form is characteristic of the William IV period and showcases the striking natural figure and colour of the rosewood veneers.

The interior is fitted with three adjustable shelves, allowing the bookcase to accommodate books and decorative objects of varying sizes, while the shallow depth makes it particularly practical for modern interiors where floor space is at a premium.

A handsome and versatile early nineteenth-century bookcase, equally suited to a study, sitting room or library.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 106 cm

Width: 94 cm

Depth: 30 cm

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition. There are the expected marks, knocks and surface scratches consistent with age and use. Minor historic veneer repairs and small losses are present in places, as is typical for furniture of this period. The shelves are adjustable and the bookcase remains structurally sound throughout.

One side has been ebonised at some point during its life, while the opposite side retains its rosewood finish. As is common with antique furniture intended to stand against a wall, this does not detract from its practical use. The bookcase displays an attractive colour and pleasing overall patina.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bookcases from the Regency and William IV periods (circa 18101837) are characterised by classical proportions, clean architectural lines, and the use of rich timber veneers such as rosewood and mahogany. Open-fronted designs were frequently crafted for private libraries and study rooms to allow immediate access to bound volumes.

These pieces prominently featured exotic rosewood veneers applied over solid oak or pine carcasses, showcasing distinct dark brown and reddish grain patterns. Shelves were traditionally made adjustable via saw-tooth timber ladders or brass pegs fitted into the interior side panels.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-cut dovetail joints on internal timber elements, original paneled back boards, and hand-carved decorative motifs such as lotus leaf or scroll pilaster capitals. The density and distinct grain figure of early Brazilian rosewood are also key markers of period construction.

Positioning an open timber bookcase against a neutral or deep dark painted wall complements the rich grain of the wood. Modern styling often balances structured rows of books with decorative ceramics, framed artwork, or small sculptures to create a layered aesthetic.

Keep the timber positioned away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer movement or cracking. Apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cotton cloth, buffing along the direction of the wood grain.
