Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An open bookcase is a form of library furniture designed without glass or timber doors to allow immediate access to stored volumes. Originating in the 18th century and gaining widespread popularity during the Regency and Victorian eras, these pieces were crafted with decorative architectural elements such as carved corbels, pilasters, and moulded plinths.

Cabinetmakers during the 19th century primarily utilised dense hardwoods including rosewood, mahogany, walnut, and oak. Fine veneers were applied over solid frames to showcase rich wood grain, while structural elements were joined using traditional hand-cut dovetails and mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Authentic period rosewood exhibits distinct dark streak patterns and natural grain depth. Structural indicators include hand-planed back boards, hand-carved accent details, brass shelf-support fittings, and evidence of historical timber oxidisation rather than modern uniform stains or synthetic lacquers.

An antique open bookcase integrates well into modern interiors by layering traditional books with contemporary sculptural items, studio ceramics, and framed prints. Positioned in a study, hallway, or living area, the dark timber creates visual contrast against lighter neutral wall surfaces.

Antique rosewood should be positioned away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent veneer lifting and timber movement. Maintenance involves regular dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and periodic application of natural beeswax polish to maintain humidity balance and protection.
