Superb Derby Porcelain Blue & White Quatrefoil Sauce Tureen & Cover C.1768

18th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A fine and rare Derby porcelain blue and white hand painted cream / sauce tureen and cover, of lobed quatrefoil shape. The knop formed as a cherry and moulded leaves and stem. A charming Chinoiserie design with an ornate scene of a pagoda set on a shoreline, surrounded by stylised trees and shrubs with phoenix type birds in the sky. Both sides with the same design and intersected on the short sides with sprays of peonies. Matching peony sprays decorate the cover and a single peony also inside the base. Both rims edged with a cell border. Unmarked, c.1768.

Reference: Ceramics Of Derbyshire, Bradley, entry 205 for a tureen of this shape and design.

It measures 16.5cm (6 1/2") by 13.7cm (5 3/8") wide and 11.2cm (4 1/2") high.

In excellent condition with just a couple of minor points: the tip of one side of the cherry stem knop has been lost and two small nibble chips to the rim of the tureen. A small firing fault to the edge of the cover where the glaze didn't take but it was decorated with the cell border so it is more felt than seen. This area is closely photographed.

No other damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear. Some areas of the cell border on the tureen are quite faint but this is underglaze and original from production, not surface wear. Very slight bleeding of the design in places but this is a common issue with Derby blue and white porcelain.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sauce tureen is a small covered serving vessel designed to keep sauces, gravies, or condiments warm at the dining table. Produced extensively during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these vessels were crafted by notable European porcelain manufactories as part of elaborate dinner services.

Eighteenth-century Derby porcelain pieces were primarily crafted from soft-paste porcelain, composed of white clay mixed with a glassy frit material. These vessels were hand-painted with cobalt oxide underglaze before being glazed and fired at high temperatures.

Authentic eighteenth-century Derby porcelain often features specific factory marks, such as crossed batons, crowns, or a D painted in underglaze blue or overglaze red, though early pieces may be unmarked. Examination under ultraviolet light can reveal the characteristic pale yellow or greenish translucent body of soft-paste porcelain.

An antique porcelain sauce tureen can serve as a decorative focal point on a sideboard, dresser, or inside a glass display cabinet. Its classic blue and white palette pairs effectively with contemporary minimalism as well as traditional layered interiors.

Clean antique porcelain gently by hand using warm water and a mild, unperfumed liquid soap, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sponges. Do not submerge items with historical repairs in water, and keep ceramics out of modern dishwashers.
