Description

Fine Austrian Gilt Bronze Sculpture: Hans Müller (1873-1937) Madonna with Child

Brief Description:

This is an exceptionally fine-quality original gilt bronze sculpture depicting the Madonna and Christ Child, masterfully created by the celebrated Austrian sculptor Hans Müller (1873–1937).

Beautifully modelled with remarkable sensitivity, the sculpture captures the tender bond between mother and child, with graceful flowing drapery and serene expressions lending the work a timeless devotional elegance. The bronze has acquired a wonderfully rich, original gilt patina, enhancing every finely cast detail.

The sculpture is signed by the artist and remains mounted on its original period variegated marble plinth, providing a striking contrast to the warm gilt bronze and creating an impressive display piece.

A superb example of Hans Müller's work, this elegant sculpture possesses both artistic refinement and enduring decorative appeal.

Weight: 3.1 kg.

About Hans Müller (1873–1937)

Hans Müller was an acclaimed Austrian sculptor, born in Vienna on 10 January 1873. He studied at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, where he trained under the distinguished sculptor Edmund von Hellmer.

Although Müller is perhaps best known for his portrait busts of prominent figures in Viennese society, he also produced an impressive body of figurative sculptures and highly accomplished animal studies, particularly hunting dogs. Following the First World War, he was commissioned to create memorial sculptures honouring those who lost their lives during the conflict.

Today, his work is held in both private and museum collections, admired for its refined modelling, expressive character, and exceptional craftsmanship. This Madonna and Child is a beautiful example of his talent, combining classical elegance with the warmth and intimacy that define his finest religious works

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Austrian gilt bronze sculptures flourished during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, centred primarily in Vienna. Sculptors of this era combined academic realism with Art Nouveau stylistic elements, producing detailed religious and decorative figures utilizing lost-wax casting methods.

These sculptures are primarily cast in bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, which is subsequently gilded with a thin layer of gold using fire-gilding or electroplating techniques. They are frequently mounted onto dark marble or onyx bases to provide stability and contrast.

Authentic pieces generally display precise chasing detail in the metalwork, a clear artist signature or foundry stamp cast directly into the metal, and age-appropriate wear to the gilded surface rather than modern spray finishes.

A fine bronze statuette serves as a sophisticated focal point when positioned on a fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or within a styled bookcase, bridging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary decor.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners, as these can strip the delicate gilding layer and alter the natural patina.
