Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth century, European foundries produced a wide range of figurative bronzes depicting genre scenes, leisure activities, and popular sports. These works captured everyday life and contemporary pastimes, catering to a growing middle-class demand for decorative domestic art.

Most figurative bronzes from this era were created using either the lost-wax casting technique or sand casting. Once cast, the raw bronze was hand-chased to refine surface details and treated with chemical solutions under heat to achieve a specific patinated finish.

Authentic period bronzes generally exhibit fine surface chasing, crisp detailing around features and clothing, and natural wear to the patina on raised areas. Look for foundry stamps, sculptor signatures, cast weight, and evidence of historical hand-finishing along casting seams.

A dark patinated bronze statue works well as a focal point on a mantelpiece, writing desk, or open bookshelf. Paired with natural timber, stone, or metallic surfaces, it adds textural contrast and historical interest to modern decorative schemes.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, paying attention to crevices. To maintain the patinated finish, apply a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax once or twice a year and buff gently, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners.
