Before studying in London and becoming one of Britain's leading war artists, Lobley grew up among these streets. He's recorded it as he knew it - full of movement, conversation and changing light.
The composition is alive with activity. Market stalls spread across the square beneath pale canvas awnings, while shoppers weave between them in small groups. Figures pause to talk; others continue purposefully on their way, their long shadows stretching across the sunlit ground.
At the centre stands the market cross, quietly anchoring the bustle around it, while the surrounding Georgian and Victorian buildings rise through a soft atmospheric haze.
Perhaps the most striking quality is the handling of light. Bright morning sunshine pours into the square, illuminating the white market tents and catching the shoulders of passing figures before dissolving into softer shadows beneath the surrounding buildings. Rather than describing every face or every brick, Lobley has allowed light itself to organise the scene. It guides the eye naturally through the market, giving the painting an impressionistic flourish.
Viewed today, the painting offers more than a record of Edwardian Huddersfield. It captures the rhythm of a thriving provincial market town, where commerce, community and daily routine come together beneath an ever-changing Yorkshire sky. Like much of Lobley's finest work, it reminds us that the most enduring subjects are often found within ordinary life carefully observed.
The canvas is presented in an attractive early twentieth-century gilt frame bearing the partial label of James Bourlet & Sons Ltd, 17-18 Nassau Street, London. James Bourlet & Sons were among Britain's foremost framemakers and fine art restorers, supplying and conserving works for leading artists, collectors and institutions.
