John Sanderson-Wells was a British painter best known for his naturalistic depictions of equestrian scenes, portraits, and 18th-century genre scenes. Born in 1872 in London, United Kingdom, he went on to study at the Slade School of Art in London and later at the Académie Julian in Paris.
''Pier Road, Whitby'' is an excellent example of his work showing a view in Whitby on the Yorkshire Coast. Measuring 10''x 13'' it is signed lower right and is framed in a good period gilt frame giving an overall size of 16''x 20''.
