Harry Kluge, Bedroom Interior - Antique Oil Painting

This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Harry Kluge (1879-1963) depicts the interior of a bedroom with a view.

A simple bed stands opposite what appears to be a chaise longue in a small bedroom, while daylight filters through lace curtains. There are no figures - yet the painting feels inhabited.

Kluge builds the composition around the window, allowing it to become both the physical and emotional centre of the room. Soft daylight enters through the glass, describing the folds of white bed linen, the worn wooden furniture and the patterned rug beneath our feet.

Outside, a glimpse of green fields and trees offers a connection with the wider world beyond the walls. The cool blue tones of the room are warmed by touches of reddish brown in the blankets, floor and furniture.

On the table, a candlestick, crockery and other small household objects are left exactly where they were last used. Nothing appears staged. He's simply painted the room with the affection of someone thoroughly familiar with it. One cannot help but wonder whether this was his own bedroom.

This interest in unoccupied interiors appears throughout Kluge's work. While he became best known for marine paintings, he was equally drawn to overlooked corners of houses, workshops and quiet architectural spaces. Rather than filling them with figures, he allowed the rooms themselves to tell their stories.

In this respect, the painting shares something of the spirit found in Vincent van Gogh's celebrated Bedroom at Arles. Both artists recognised that an ordinary room can become a portrait of its unseen occupant.

Perhaps this reflects something of Kluge himself.
