Description

Antique 19th century pair of William IV armchairs in mahogany, an elegant and increasingly scarce matching pair, exceptionally well made and of fine quality.

Showcasing the refined styling of the William IV period, these chairs combine graceful proportions with outstanding craftsmanship.

Each armchair is upholstered in an attractive yellow fabric, offering both comfort and a striking contrast against the rich mahogany frames. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the reign of King William IV from 1830 to 1837, this style acts as a transitional bridge between classical Regency proportions and heavier Victorian forms. Key features include bold architectural outlines, heavy scroll carving, turned legs, and substantial timber construction.

Frames were typically crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Internal upholstery comprised hand-tied steel coil springs, natural horsehair stuffing, and hessian webbing supported by brass castors.

Look for hand-carved mahogany scroll terminals on the armrests, heavy turned or fluted front legs, and splayed rear legs. Original pieces often retain period brass castors, hand-planed timber underframes, and evidence of historical upholstery work.

Position a pair opposite a modern low-profile sofa to introduce textural contrast and visual weight. The rich tone of dark mahogany and vibrant upholstery can be complemented by neutral wall paint and minimal architectural surroundings.

Clean timber surfaces using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain annually. Vacuum velvet upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust accumulation and keep the pile raised.
