Chair Fine William IV Leather Reclining Armchair C1830

19th century
Description

A fine William IV reclining library armchair, dating from the early 19th century, beautifully crafted in solid mahogany and retaining its elegant original proportions.

The chair features a generously sized reclining back operated by a traditional ratchet mechanism, allowing for multiple reclining positions. The shaped mahogany frame is supported by finely carved front legs terminating in the original ceramic castors, while the rear legs are of matching form. A concealed pull-out footrest extends smoothly to create a comfortable chaise-style seat, making this an exceptionally practical and desirable country house armchair.

Upholstered in richly patinated leather, the chair displays the character and warmth that only age can produce, complementing the deep colour and figured grain of the mahogany frame. The combination of restrained William IV design, quality craftsmanship and ingenious engineering makes this an outstanding example of early Victorian comfort furniture.

An impressive and highly functional piece, ideal for a library, study, drawing room or country house interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

William IV furniture, produced between 1830 and 1837, bridges the Regency and Victorian eras. These armchairs typically feature robust proportions, scrolled arms, turned legs, and carved mahogany frames, reflecting a transition towards heavier design aesthetics.

Armchairs from this period were crafted using solid mahogany or rosewood frames, hand-stitched horsehair padding, and natural leather upholstery. Mechanical reclining elements utilised cast-iron or steel ratchets, complemented by brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved mahogany details, original brass castors, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and period-correct mechanical reclining mechanisms beneath the seat. Look for natural wear patterns on leather upholstery and hand-hammered brass studs.

Position the armchair alongside modern minimalist side tables or against neutral backdrop walls to create a focal point. Combining dark mahogany tones and warm leather with contemporary lighting balances historical design with modern aesthetics.

Keep the armchair away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the leather from drying and cracking. Apply specialist leather conditioner periodically and dust the mahogany frame using a soft cloth and natural beeswax polish.
