Dr Wall / First Period Worcester Porcelain Cream / Milk Jug Landscape Pattern Rare Variant C.1780

18th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A lovely first period Worcester porcelain blue and white sparrow beak cream jug printed with a rare combination of landscape patterns. The main pattern is the leading side of the "Circled Landscape" with a viaduct type bridge with a small structure on top, a house on the river bank and a small boat in the foreground. On the other side within the same patterned border is a scene loosely based on a mash up of some of the themes of the "European Landscape Group" but a distinctly different set of engraved designs.

It is set against a main river backdrop with a sailing boat to the left and a rowing boat with four occupants to the foreground. To the right is a windmill with a house and tree and smaller buildings away in the distance. An example of this rare second print is seen in colour plate 113, in Godden's Guide to English Blue & White Porcelain.

The frieze around the vignettes is repeated inside the rim with two further tiny landscape scenes. Grooved strap handle. c. 1780.

Provenance: The Bayard Collection.

It measures 8.9cm (3 1/2") high, 8.5cm (3 3/8") spout to handle and 7cm (2 3/4") wide.

In very good condition with just a small chip to the foot rim and two other tiny nicks. No other damage, repair or restoration. The spout has an underglaze ding near the tip from manufacture. Minimal handling wear.

References: Worcester Blue & White Porcelain, Branyan, French & Sandon, sections II.B.15 and II.B.16. The usual opposing pattern to the "Circled Landscape" is well documented as being another bridge scene, illustrated in "An Introduction To English Blue & White Porcelains" by Godden, entries 138 and 141, pg. 66-67 and a further example on pg, 68; and Caughley & Worcester Porcelains by Godden, plates 249 and 234. Example tea bowl & saucer in the V&A.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First Period Worcester porcelain refers to ceramic items produced at the Worcester factory between 1751 and 1783 during the management of Dr John Wall. These pieces are distinguished by soft-paste porcelain bodies containing soaprock and decorated with underglaze cobalt blue patterns.

Jugs from this period were crafted from soft-paste porcelain made with soaprock (steatite) to withstand thermal shock. Decorative designs were either hand-painted or transfer-printed in cobalt blue under a clear lead glaze prior to firing.

Authentic items often show a distinctive greenish or yellowish translucency when held to light and feature a smooth, thin glaze. Factory markings on the base, such as a crescent or fretted square, were frequently applied in underglaze blue.

Incorporate historic blue and white porcelain by displaying individual pieces on open shelving, sideboards, or inside glass cabinets alongside neutral contemporary ceramics to create visual interest.

Wash soft-paste porcelain by hand in lukewarm water using a mild liquid detergent and a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaning agents, rapid temperature shifts, and soaking, which can compromise historic glaze and paste.
