A Late 18thc 1st Period Worcester "Bandstand" Pattern Sparrowbeak Jug C.1780

18th century
Description

Description.

This is not a common design though, to be fair, neither is it vanishingly rare. It is, however, beautifully printed and off a lovely nature. Unusually, this printed design is accompanied by light blue painted wash decoration. There is dispute as to whether this is a Worcester original or, conversely, a copy of the Caughley design.

Disguised numeral mark.

Condition.

In excellent antique condition. No apparent defects.

Dimensions.

9.5cm tall

See our other items. If you like what you see, we do have other items that are not necessarily listed and which may be of interest.

We use recycled packaging. It helps our environmental footprint, but does not necessarily look very pretty!

Important

We charge postage at cost for international buyers. Please ask us for a quotation for international postage. We generally ship with the Royal mail, tracked and signed. Please do not pay for the item until we provide you with a postage quotation. To facilitate that process please let us have your PayPal or email details.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A First Period Worcester sparrowbeak jug is an 18th-century cream or milk container produced by the Worcester porcelain factory between 1751 and 1783, characterized by a small, pointed spout resembling a birds beak.

First Period Worcester porcelain was crafted using a soft-paste body containing soaprock (steatite), which allowed the vessels to withstand hot liquids without cracking, and decorated with underglaze cobalt blue oxide.

Authentic pieces typically feature a greenish translucency when held to light, an underglaze blue open or filled crescent mark on the base, and characteristic slight shrinkage glaze lines near the foot rim.

These small ceramic pieces can be displayed within curated groups on a dining room sideboard, arranged inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or placed on open shelving to complement contemporary neutral palettes.

Clean soft-paste porcelain gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding immersion in water for extended periods and keeping away from dishwashers or extreme thermal shocks.
