Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century portraiture typically features formal poses, detailed realism, and dark or subdued backgrounds to highlight the sitters facial expressions and attire. Works from this era often incorporate symbolic clothing, lace, and drapery to indicate social status.

Artists traditionally applied oil-based pigments onto stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were typically constructed from wood with moulded plaster or gesso ornamentation, finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period paintings exhibit age-appropriate craquelure patterns across the paint surface, natural yellowing of varnish, and hand-cut wooden stretcher bars on the reverse. The gilded frame will often show light oxidisation and natural wear to raised edges.

Position the artwork as a central focal point above a console table or mantelpiece to anchor the space. Combining classic figurative art with modern minimalist furnishings creates an effective visual contrast.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with high humidity fluctuations. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning or varnish removal.
