The huge, magnificent work was painted in the last quarter of the 19th century by Sir Gerald Festus Kelly KCVO PRA (1879 - 1972).

It is an extremely lifelike image that portrays Major-General Clarke in a standing three-quarter length pose.
He is depicted in ceremonial uniform showcasing several prestigious chivalric orders, including the Order of the Garter (the blue sash across his chest), the Order of the British Empire (GBE), and the Venerable Order of Saint John (GCStJ).

The work is mounted within its original, huge and impressive giltwood and gesso moulded frame that is embellished with vine and leaves.

Maj.-Gen. Sir Stanley de Astel Calvert Clarke was born in 1837. He was the son of Colonel John Frederick Sales Clarke. He married Mary Temple Rose, daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir John Rose, 1st Bt. and Charlotte Temple, on 15 September 1867. He died on 29 November 1911. He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) He lived at The Ranger's Lodge, Hyde Park, London. He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) He held the office of Clerk Marshal and Chief Equerry to HM King Edward VII. He held the office of Serjeant-at-Arms of the House of Lords between 1910 and 1911
