Description

17th Century Dutch Old Master Oil Portrait Painting of Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange (1567-1625)

Brief Description:

This is an exceptional quality original Dutch Old Master Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting depicting Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange (1567–1625).

Painted during the late 17th or early 18th century by a talented follower of the renowned Dutch Baroque portraitist Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt (1566–1641), the distinguished bust-length portrait depicts the Prince wearing full ceremonial armour, a beautifully rendered white pleated linen ruff, and the unmistakable orange sash draped across his shoulder, symbolising the illustrious House of Orange.

Executed with remarkable attention to detail, the portrait displays the refined brushwork and restrained elegance associated with the Dutch Golden Age of portrait painting.

The painting underwent a comprehensive professional restoration during the 20th century and is now presented in excellent display condition.

It is housed within a superb later gilt cushion-moulded frame, which complements the work beautifully.

The reverse retains several early gallery labels attached to the stretcher, providing further interest and evidence of the painting's long provenance.

A distinguished and highly decorative example of Dutch Old Master portraiture, this impressive work would make a superb addition to any collection of 17th-century European art or historical portraiture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

17th-century Dutch Old Master portraiture is recognised for realistic human representation, dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, and detailed depictions of contemporary attire such as lace ruffs and armour.

Artists traditionally applied hand-ground oil pigments onto stretched linen canvas or wooden panels, which were later housed in timber frames treated with gesso or gilding.

Authentic period oil paintings exhibit natural age craquelure across the paint surface, subtle varnish oxidisation, historical joinery on stretcher bars, and technique consistent with period workshop methods.

Hang a classical oil portrait as a focal point above a mantelpiece or sideboard, pairing dark historical artwork against contemporary neutral walls for balanced contrast.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature changes, and high humidity levels, removing dust gently with a soft dry brush rather than liquid cleansers.
