Pair of French Louis Xvi Revival Ebonised Beech Salon Armchairs & Footstools, C.1870

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A good quality pair of French Louis XVI Revival ebonised beech salon armchairs with matching footstools, dating from the late nineteenth century.

The shaped and carved frames are surmounted by floral wreath crestings above padded backs upholstered in original woven pictorial tapestry depicting pastoral scenes. The chairs retain carved oval paterae to the shoulders, scrolling arms, fluted supports and turned tapering front legs. Each chair is accompanied by its original matching footstool, upholstered in the same woven tapestry.

The restrained classical design, combined with the ebonised finish and finely woven pastoral upholstery, is characteristic of French Louis XVI Revival furniture of the period. The matching tapestry scenes have mellowed attractively with age and contribute greatly to the decorative appeal of the set.

Complete salon suites retaining their original companion footstools are becoming increasingly uncommon. Equally suited to a drawing room, bedroom or dressing room, they provide both comfortable seating and a striking decorative focal point.

DIMENSIONS

Armchairs

Height: 102cm

Width: 64cm

Depth: 64cm

Seat height: 45cm

Footstools

Height: 19cm

Width: 40cm

Depth: 32cm

CONDITION

The chairs and footstools are in good, solid condition and present well overall. There are light marks, knocks and localised wear to the ebonised finish consistent with age and use.

The original woven tapestry upholstery has faded naturally with age and shows light marks and general wear consistent with its age, while remaining attractive and entirely serviceable. The decorative braid trim is present throughout.

The chairs have been professionally reupholstered in the past, with later webbing beneath the seats, while retaining their period tapestry coverings. The frames are structurally sound, all joints are firm, and the matching footstools remain in similarly good condition.

Overall, this is an attractive and well-preserved late nineteenth-century French salon suite with honest signs of age and use.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, Louis XVI Revival furniture draws upon neoclassical design principles from eighteenth-century France. Key characteristics include straight geometric lines, fluted turned legs, rosette carvings, and classical symmetry, departing from the elaborate curves of the preceding Rococo style.

Frames were typically constructed from hardwoods such as beech or walnut, often finished with black ebonisation, gilding, or paint. Upholstery frequently featured hand-woven tapestry fabrics, velvet, or silk damask, supported by traditional horsehair stuffing and steel coil springs.

Look for hand-carved detail work on the cresting and leg joinery, correct age-appropriate wear to the ebonised or gilded finish, and evidence of traditional upholstery techniques such as hand-tied springs and webbed seat frames.

Position these accent chairs alongside clean-lined modern sofas or within a bedroom corner to create contrast. The combination of dark ebonised frames and patterned upholstery provides visual texture against neutral or monochrome backdrops.

Dust ebonised wood gently with a dry, soft microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can damage original patinas. Vacuum tapestry fabric lightly using a low-suction upholstery attachment, and keep the pieces away from direct sunlight to prevent textile fading.
