Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bergere is an eighteenth-century French style of upholstered armchair characterized by an exposed, carved timber frame, enclosed padded armrests, and a deep, loose seat cushion designed for comfort.

Traditional bergere chairs feature solid hardwood frames, often walnut, beech, or oak, sculpted with hand-carved detailing. The upholstery traditionally incorporates natural textiles such as linen, cotton toile, or silk brocade supported by jute webbing and coiled springs.

Authentic period chairs typically exhibit hand-carved joinery, visible pegging, mortise and tenon construction, and natural wear patination on the timber frame. Inspection beneath the seat frame often reveals traditional hand-bound coil springs, horsehair stuffing, and historical upholstery tacks.

These armchairs are frequently positioned in pairs opposite a contemporary sofa to create symmetry, or placed individually alongside a side table to form a reading corner. The mix of structured carved wood and pattern offers textural contrast when layered against neutral contemporary backdrops.

Preserve the fabric by vacuuming gently using a soft brush attachment and keeping the item away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading. Timber frames should be dusted regularly and occasionally treated with natural beeswax polish to maintain wood hydration.
